The Value of Art

what makes art, art

Art is often thought of as a human pursuit, a reflection of the human condition and a form of self-expression.

Art is human — we all agree.

However, AI tools such as Midjourney or Runway Gen 1-2, a new form of artistic expression has emerged, blurring lines and raising questions about what constitutes "real" art.

The Value of Art

Some argue if it’s made by AI, it can’t be true art. Even that’s an interesting debate in itself, that’s not what bothers me.

I’ve seen an objection a few times to AI art that it is somehow less valuable than art created by humans, since it’s not the result of hours of labor.

That’s misleading and potentially harmless.

Art isn’t about who can put in the most amount of hours, it isn’t and shouldn’t become a competition. The value of art is not determined by the number of hours spent creating it, but rather by its aesthetic qualities, emotional impact, and ability to communicate complex ideas.

Not all inputs are the same

Even anyone can use AI and make something, it doesn’t mean everyone can use it well. A piano is the same: everyone can make a note, even by accident, but not everyone can play it well, nor play it with soul.

Claire explains the opportunity of AI perfectly in her tweet.

AI is a differentiator, it’ll augment and build on your current knowledge and expertise — it becomes a powerful collaborator, not your replacement.

Thank you for reading this one, it’s an important idea to understand.

See you next Friday,
